Manual for Music Designer app

  1. Description

Nobody knows who would like Music Designer the most. Possibly, a DJ? Or someone who needs unique ringtones for his phone? Or maybe those who want to compose their own music for piano, but unfortunately do not know notes or are unable to play? Possibly it is composers seeking unique melodies and combinations of instrument sounds? Or it is arrangers who need to speed up the songs recording process? Maybe it is students of musical colleges who need to urgently compose and write a score in Mozart style for exam? Likely, it is music schools teachers, who use Music Designer as a methodological aid for teaching music or playing the piano? But we clearly know that this is everyone who likes to experiment with sound and music!

Music Designer is a very easy music composer computerized composer.

Nowadays, it is not necessary to know the musical notation to compose music. Music Designer application will create the unique composition in a few minutes under your guidance.
You can play the melody on the piano or hum it into the microphone, and the application will arrange it by itself. You just need to select the instruments and click the Play button, and the application will do everything else!

And this is not all! Using additional settings of the instruments you can create very interesting unique melodies and combinations of instrument sounds in different styles and genres.

The most interesting is that Music Designer allows you to record both MIDI file and the score composed by you. The variants of their use are limited only by the user’s imagination.

For example, after creating the track you like you can immediately send the project to your friends directly from the application and together with it you can immediately send MIDI audio file and the notes of your track in PDF format.

Or you can send the MIDI file to your PC with the professional musical sound record studio installed, and use this MIDI to accelerate the process of creation of your sound tracks for YouTube! We win you the time!

Using the built-in MDSN tools, the Music Designer’s users can even upload their creations right from the applications to be seen by everyone, you can share your project, records in MIDI format with built-in player and viewing the notes in dynamics as the track plays.

User can change this list of the instruments using the command: Left menu -> Instruments, and set 30 user instruments, that would be available either by default or for the current project.

4.1.4.     Setting of instrument

The Music Designer app uses the classical concept of separation of musical work into parts. In accordance with it, Music Designer has 4 types of parts classification:

A particular instrument, selected by the user and placed on the Music Designer stage, corresponds to each part.

Number of parts (instruments) simultaneously present on the stage cannot be more than 8.

To set the behavior and properties of each instrument, in particular, octave numbers, selection of permitted rhythms, selection of resolution of sequence of notes crossfades for this part (instrument), you need to press button with an active instrument selected on the stage. The menu will appear on the screen, consisting, depending on the type of part and on the way of music generation.

The selection of settings in the instrument behavior menu depends first of all on the track generation method. To enter the menu of setting the generation method you need to press the button on the main screen. The screenshot of this setting menu is shown below:

In music the relations of pitch of the sounds work in accordance with certain system. The system is called the MODE (harmony). At the heart of a separate melody and musical work as a whole lies a certain mode, which is the organizing beginning of the pitch ratio of sounds in music, giving, together with other expressive means, a certain character of the sound to music.

The Music Designer app uses 13 modes and 2 generation methods: Mode use and Patterns use.

  1. Generation type -> Mode use – means that the melody and all the secondary parts of the track will be generated taking into account the respective musical mode. Musical modes (Indian, Lokrian, Turkish, Phrygian, Blues, Aeolian, harmonic minor, melodic minor, Dorian, Mixolydian, Ionian, Lydian, Pentatonic) available for selection are shown in the following screenshot. The generation of the sequence of notes crossfades (melody and second voices) when choosing this method of generation (using modes) is carried out randomly and does not depend on any pre-recorded patterns of crossfades of the note sequence (in contrast to the type of the melody generation Patterns use). The range of random crossfade is regulated only by limitation established in the setting for this generation type Mode use.

  1. Generation type -> Pattern use – means that the melody and all the secondary parts of the track will be generated based on the composition of the notes of the modes of the harmonic minor and major. Sequences of jamps and relations of sounds in pitch in this case are regulated by certain patterns, selection of which can be left random by default, or it can be set manually, in accordance with ideas and wishes of the user.

The similar menu block for all types of parts and ways of music generation is seen on the following screenshot:

The block consists of 4 setting characteristics:

  1. Instrument - in the drop-down list you can set the instrument necessary for the user. The standard MIDI, and thus this application, allows to use 128 instruments in total:

  1. Function - select the type of the part:

  1. Octave - setting the octave in which the instrument will begin to play:

  1. Volume - setting the volume of sound of the instrument:

4.1.5.     Setting of track

To enter the menu of track and setting the music generation method you need to press the button on the main screen. Provided below are the detailed explanations and screenshots of the respective parameters of the menu:

4.1.5.1.         Music mode

In music the relations of pitch of the sound work in accordance with certain system. The system is called the MODE (harmony). At the heart of a separate melody and musical work as a whole lies a certain mode, which is the organizing beginning of the pitch ratio of sounds in music, giving, together with other expressive means, a certain character of the sound to music.

For a detailed description of the parameter see paragraph 4.1.4.

4.1.5.2.         Tonality

For a detailed description of the parameter see paragraph 4.1.4.

4.1.5.3.         Tempo

As you see, this screenshot is very simple - a regulator of track tempo.

The higher is the tempo value, the faster will the instruments play. The default tempo is 90.

4.1.5.4.         Melisma

Melisma (Ancient Greek μέλισμα — song, melody) — various melodic ornaments of sound that do not change the tempo and rhythmic pattern of the melody.

Melisma in this case are set by particular number of notes of which they consist. The screenshot shows that Melisma are on (ON) and the number of notes they consist of is 5.

4.1.5.5.         Motive

In music, the motive is a short musical idea that stands out from the current musical figure; a musical fragment or sequence, distinguished by the fact that in the work they have either a few special meanings, or one single meaning.

The parameter serves to set the motive content. In this application it is set that the elementary building blocks of motive consist of a single Bar.

Bar  (or Tact - Lat. tactus  touch; late Latin meaning  push, hit) — unit of the musical meter, starting with the strongest part and ending before the next one equal to it in strength.

Each Bar is designated by letters A, B, C, D and their derivatives A’, A’’, A’’’, A’’’, etc. Thus, in this application the length of motive, as can be seen on screenshot, does not surpass 4 Bars.

Every Bar (letter) is the unique sequence of sounds of different tone and length. If Auto generation was selected as the melody generation parameter, then, before the melody begins to sound, musical phrases (2-4 motives) and musical sentences (2-8 phrases) are formed from the elementary basic blocks (Bars) A and B depending on the type of options presented in the screenshot. Using this tool for selection of motives set, you can select the musical phrase in accordance with the user’s preferences. Try to experiment with this setting. This brings a strong effect in the variety and composition of musical phrases and, in general, of the track.

4.1.5.6.         Harmonization

Harmonization, in music, is a combination of notes of the 2nd voice (in this case melody) with the appropriate chords (in this case, the 2nd voice and accompaniment). Here, we have a list of allowed triads (chords) that can sound after a certain stage of the melody. In order to use this setting, you need to have basic knowledge of musical harmony and the type of allowed triad sequences.

In order to change the harmonization parameters set by default, it is necessary to select the allowed triad levels for each melody step, which, if harmonized, can be selected as a harmonized chord. In this screenshot there is a 1 step melody, i.e. tonic, respectively, you can see that in the melody, for the note of the first stage, the transitions to the stage 1, 4, 5, 2, 3, 7 are allowed in the sequence according to the set priority, from I to VII.

In the same way all other 7 stages are set. To process to the setting of other stages you need to press a button and to select the necessary stage from the drop-down list:

4.1.6.     Setting generation of instruments for the parts Melody or Second Voice

4.1.6.1.         Rhythmic structure

For the generation types “Pattern use”, “Mode use” the similar menu block “Rhythmic structure” is used in the “Setting generation” menu:

“Rhythmic structure” setting serves to select the list of the rhythms the tuned instrument will use. You can see the entire list of the rhythm by pressing the button . The user can manually set the rhythms that he wishes to apply to current project, and in particular, to the musical instrument. Also the user may create his own custom-made rhythms.  The list of the build-in rhythms looks as follows:

To select a certain rhythm you need to tick against the necessary rhythm.

To create a new rhythm you need to click the Create Pattern button, after it the rhythm pattern creation window will open:

To record a new rhythm you should select by clicking on respective length of notes or pauses in the Motive structure editor window and press the button save

4.1.6.2.         Patterns

Patterns parameter serves to select the list of allowed transitions in pitch ratio of sounds of the part and sequence of their use in the part (random or by order). The parameter shall be used only when Patterns use type of generation is set. The Patterns menu is shown in the following screenshot:

List of the patterns (rule of permitted transitions of notes in the part) can be seen by clicking the button . The user can manually set the patterns that he wishes to apply to current part. Also the user may create his own custom-made patterns.  The list of the patterns of transition looks as follows:

The user can keep selection of the patterns installed by the app by default, or they may change them in accordance with their rules. To select the pattern thick the respective sign against the necessary pattern.

In addition, the user can create his own pattern using the pattern editor. To do this you need to click the Create Pattern button, after it the following editor will open:

4.1.6.3.         Modes

The Modes parameter is used to select the value of "Range" (span) of transitions according to the pitch ratio of the voice sound. The transitions themselves are made in random order. The parameter shall be used only when Mode use type of generation is set. The Modes menu is shown in the following screenshot:

The Range parameter can be chosen from the list in drop down menu:

The user may keep the range value set by default, or may select it at his own discretion from the drop down list. The indicated range values in the list mean the “allowed swing” of the note deviation from the note of the tonic. One octave is 12 notes. Accordingly, if “1 octave” is selected, and the tonic is the C of the first octave, then the application will allow the transitions of notes to be no more than C of small octave and C of the second octave, which is ± 12 notes.

4.1.6.4.         The initial note is determined randomly

In the Generation Setting menu, specifically for the Melody part, there is a setting called “The initial note is determined randomly”. The setting lets to allow to determine the initial note of the motive at random if the user selects “Yes”. The default setting is “No”.

4.1.6.5.         Harmonization

The harmonization setting allows the user to select the way of motive harmonization. It is done either in automatic mode included in the application algorithm, or manually.

When the user selects Manually parameter, the additional parameter will appear - selection of the note which will be considered a tonic for the composition.  This is necessary, for example, if the motive begins with an up-beat and the application algorithms can not independently and correctly determine in which key the music shall be harmonized. The tonic in the automatic harmonization mode is the first note of a motive.

4.1.7.     Setting of accompaniment instrument

Entry in the menu of setting of accompanying instrument is also made by pressing button.

On the following screenshot you can see that in this case the Acoustic Grand Piano instrument is selected as accompaniment:

4.1.7.1.         Accompaniment patterns

Just like in patterns of other parts, the Accompaniment has its own type of patterns, which can be used both in random order, and in order selected by the user. In this case, the accompaniment pattern is a sequence of one Bar long notes, reproduced periodically with changed pitch, depending on the harmony of motive and of track as a whole.

To enter the patterns selection menu you need to press the button after it, essentially, the list of patterns will appear:

User may select by himself, which pattern or the list of patterns the application shall use for particular musical project.

In order to change the pattern you need to press the button , the following window will appear:

Here the one bar long note sequence is recorded.

To change the pattern (change any note or length), press the button, then, the toolkit will appear, allowing you to make the appropriate changes:

In order to perform an action on a note, you need to select it, for it you need to click directly on the note that is subject to change.

After the selection, the note will turn red and a short description will appear next to it - the transition cipher (in this case 2~1~0.25~100, see the next screenshot).

The first number in this characteristics means the type of transition from the previous note to selected note. There are 3 types of transition in the application (those are shown in the lower part of window):

The second number of this characteristic means the value of the transition in the notes to which the note “jumps” relatively to the previous one (the transition interval).

The third number of this characteristic means the length of the note.

The fourth number of the characteristic means the volume of the note as a percentage.

In the pattern change mode, you cannot change the transition type for the note. The exception is only made for the cases when you removed the note first, and then decided to create a new one. In this case, before creating a note, you must first click on the transition type button, thereby assigning it the type of the corresponding transition, chromatic, tonal or chord.

Tonality and chord shifts are needed in order for the application algorithm to “know” which transitions of this sequence of notes need to be changed during the music playback, depending on the “movement” of the harmony of the motive, in particular for the correct determination of the corresponding steps for major or minor.

Editing:

  1. The pitch of the note is changed using the buttons ,
  2. The length of the note is changed using the buttons ,
  3. The removal of the note is performed using the button
  4. The return to the patterns list menu is performed using the button
  5. The existing and edited pattern is saved automatically.

Creation of new pattern:

  1. Click Create Pattern in the Select Pattern menu. An empty pattern will appear:

  1. Click the button to start the creation of a new pattern. The corresponding instrumentation will appear on the blank screen of the pattern: a list of notes and pauses, a tool for changing the pitch of notes (,buttons), deleting them (), changing the note length (, ) and the transition type assignment buttons (chromatic, tonal or chord):

  1. To record a note you need to perform the following actions:
    1.  select the length of future note or pause from this group of buttons:

  1. To determine the transition type from this group of buttons:

  1. To set a note to a music staff by touching the respective place on the music staff

The first note or pause of the bar will always be A.

During the recording of accompaniment pattern notes, a group of buttons with lengths decreases and disappears when the measure is completely filled with notes with a sum of lengths equal to the 4th quarters.

After this you need to save a pattern by pressing the button , after it the dialogue window will appear to let the user create the name for the pattern and save the created pattern.

User can save this pattern for any instrument of accompaniment (common) or only for this particular instrument (for instrument only), i.e. for piano only.

When leaving the mode of editing or creating the accompaniment patterns, we go back to the menu of setting instrument generation - accompaniment.

4.1.7.2.         Harmonization

This menu, as you can see in the following screenshot, includes Harmonization parameter:

When the user selects Manually parameter, the additional parameter will appear - selection of the note which will start the accompaniment bar.

In the dropdown menu you can select the note which will start the accompaniment bar. Otherwise the bar will start with tonic every time. This will allow you to diversify the accompaniment in the track. The sound will not be as ordinary as if we always used a tonic.

In the example shown in the following screenshot the default parameter “automatically” is selected, i.e., in this case, as was already explained above, the bar will start with the tonic note. In this case it is C note:

The next example shows the mode with “manual” parameter and selection of F# note. As you can see, the accompaniment bar starts with F#:

4.1.8.     Setting of drums (drum)

User can add such instrument as the drum to the stage.

Setting of the drum is similar to setting of accompaniment. Press the button :

The drums setting menu includes 4 blocks of patterns for convenience. For the convenience of the user, the first 2 blocks have patterns for the cymbals and drums. 3th and 4th blocks are empty and are meant to be filled by user with his own patterns. User can select the drums patterns from the first 2 blocks that are written by default, or create his own - 3, 4 blocks. To create a new pattern you need to press Create Pattern button:

After this the empty editor of drums pattern will appear. The editor of the drums patterns consists of the list of the types of the drums, selection of lengths of the notes and pauses, which can be put on the music staff. The length of the pattern is one measure.

Creation of new pattern:

  1. Click Create Pattern in the Select Pattern menu. The empty pattern will appear:

  1. Click the button to start the creation of a new pattern. The corresponding instrumentation will appear on the blank screen of the pattern: a list of notes lengths  and pauses, a tool for changing the pitch of notes (,buttons), deleting them (), changing the note length (, ):

  1. To record a note (length of sounding of the act of the drums) you need to perform the next actions:
    1.  select the length of future note or pause from this group of buttons:

If necessary, you can correct the length using the buttons ,

  1. To set a note to a music staff by touching the respective place on the music staff (on the necessary instrument), if necessary you can adjust the instrument using the buttons ,

During the recording of the drums pattern notes, a group of buttons with lengths decreases and disappears when the measure is completely filled with notes with a sum of lengths equal to the 4th quarters.

After this you need to save a pattern by pressing the button , after it the dialogue window will appear to let the user create the name for the pattern and save the created pattern.

User can save this pattern for any instrument of the drums (common) or only for this particular instrument (for instrument only), for example, for piano only.

When leaving the mode of editing or creating the drums patterns, we go back to the menu of setting instrument generation of the drums.
